MAHALO!

And a fond Aloha…

Due to the volcanic activity of Kilauea Volcano here on the Big Island of Hawai’i over the spring, summer and fall of 2018, the Nui Pohaku Ohana has decided to close up shop and pursue other avenues…

We would like to express a gigantic Island-Style Mahalo (thank you) to all our guests for making this dream a reality for the past 12 years! We are also very grateful to have been blessed with amazing tour guides and employees throughout our time and consider all our members to be Ohana for Life!

The website will remain up, through at least the end of the year, if you’d like to find our contact info, glimpse slideshows of your favorite tours, or even snag a photo for your own sake :)

We can recommend some friends of ours for your future touring needs as well!
- Kailani Tours Hawaii is a newer company with a bright future for volcano tours and has provided members of our Ohana multiple job opportunities!
- Hawaii Forest and Trail has been a respected tour company since 1994 and offers some of the most diverse and comprehensive tours on the Big Island!
- Zip Isle at Botanical World provides an amazing Zipline experience as well as a tour of one of the most breathtaking rainforest gardens on the Big Island. Perfectly positioned on the Hamakua Coast, its views are second to none!

We wish you all many blessings in the years ahead!
Mahalo and a fond Aloha,
The Nui Pohaku Ohana

KILAUEA VOLCANO BIKE & LAVA COMBO

Ride a bike through the Volcanoes National Park and explore the lava in the Puna district all on one tour! Experience the volcano up close and personal as you ride through plush rainforest and lava frozen in time on your 21 speed mountain bike. Your cycling adventure takes place around the rim of the Kilauea Volcano and down a portion of the Chain of Craters road. It consists of mostly level terrain with a couple of small uphill and downhill sections thrown in for fun! Along with the cycling portion, you will hike through the rainforest that leads directly through an amazing lava tube. Also witness the heart of the volcano exploding at Halema’uma’u Crater. During your ride, you will stop at the Jaggar Museum, home to many seismographs, which monitor every twitch of the earth.

After the bike tour of the Volcanoes National Park, journey to the Puna District on the backside of Kilauea Volcano, which has forever been changed by the lava flows in the early 1990’s. Depending on the volcanic activity at the time of the tour, we will try to locate “flow or glow” either at the coast or with a trip up to Halema’uma’u Crater. A pool of lava below the surface creates the glow in one of two main vents. Our tour guides specialize in taking the “road less traveled” through the Puna area to show you wonderful sights that most travelers never see on their own or with other tour companies.

Enjoy a special lunch during the bike ride and dinner on the evening portion. Assorted snacks and drinks will also be served during the tour.

ZIPLINE TOUR ADDS AMAZING 8TH LINE AS A DUAL FINALE!

On December 6, 2017, Zip Isle, Nui Pohaku’s long-time zipline tour partner, unveiled a new, 8th line to it’s zip tour and it is nothing short of breathtaking! The new line is a dual-racing line, which means two riders zip along side by side at the same time - which makes for great photos (if you dare ;) and huge, HUGE smiles! The dual line is also the most impressive line on the course, flying 300 feet over a Jurassic-like rainforest view that includes a 250 foot waterfall to boot!

The opening ceremony was attended by many who live and work in the nearby and island-wide communities including Valerie Poindexter, Chairwoman of the County Council; and Representative Joy San Buenaventure. The ceremony also included a Hawaiian blessing of the new line performed by Lanakila Mangauil, who focused on the rewarding relationship the company has held with community in the past decade as well as the continuing responsibility to continue and foster that relationship in the future. After the ceremony we all adjourned together (after zipping, of course!) to the gardens for “heavy pups” and live music! A special Mahalo to Mark and Zika and the entire Zip Isle staff for making our part of the day truly wonderful!

NUI JOINS FORCES WITH "Every Kid in the Park"

On November 7, 2016 we were very Honored to bring fourth grade students from the Ka'u District to the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park for the "Every Kid in the Park Program". Senator Mazie Hirono presented these wonderful students with the new programs park passes and also joined them on a beautiful hike through park trails. This was a privilege to enjoy this special day with them. This program is to encourage the youth to explore and appreciate the natural/environmental resources. Many thanks to Senator Hirono and all the Park Rangers who helped make this day happen and also to Elizabeth Fien, Director of the Friends of the National Park for organizing the very special event.

Another Beautiful week on the Big Island!

It was been another beautiful week on the Big Island! The lava lake on the summit of Kilauea has been very exciting and gave our guests a surprise show at 11:59 a.m. Tuesday! Rock-fall from Halema'uma'u Crater wall fell into the lava lake creating and explosion, throwing fragments of molten lava and a huge cloud of ash into the air. Our guide Angelique, witnessed this event with her guests from a crater on the other side of the caldera. She pulled out her phone just in time to snap a picture before the cloud elongated into the sky.
